History Of Speak For Yourself
The club was founded in 1992 when some of the members of Darlington and District Business Club wanted to improve their communication skills to help them manage their businesses and deal with customers and staff more effectively.
Originally called Darlington Speakers Club, our activities were loosely based around those of Toastmasters International whose input and support were greatly appreciated.
It was not long before membership expanded beyond those who were members of the business club to include anyone who was interested in improving their public speaking and presentation skills. Our activities and methods became less structured and more varied in response to the individual needs of the members.
In September 2003, the club's name was changed to Speak For Yourself as members were regularly attending from places as far away as Tyneside, Teesside and the Yorkshire Coast.
The award of a grant from Awards For All in 2006 led to extensive promotion of the club's benefits in local media, thus increasing the membership and expanding the variety of experience brought by the members.
Between 2007 and 2009, meetings were also held in Stockton-on-Tees. However, as most of the members who visited that venue also attended the Darlington meetings, we decided to suspend our meetings there.
In 2010 we are focusing our efforts on the Darlington meetings and have some interesting developments in the pipeline.
